Our father and ALS

Though he is no longer with us, our father, Walter Kelley, lives on in our hearts. We honor his life and accomplishments and admire his bravery during his battle with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS).

ALS is also often called Lou Gehrig’s Disease. It is a progressive neurodegenerative disease and over time takes away a person’s ability to speak, walk, swallow and breathe. There is no known cure. After a diagnosis, a person typically lives from two to five years.

In most cases, a family history of ALS is not present. Approximately 30,000 people in the United States live with ALS today and an additional 5,600 people are diagnosed with ALS each year in our country.

Help find a cure

In memory of our father, we are passionate about finding a cure for ALS. We invite our community to show their support and help make a difference by participating in the Ride to Defeat ALS event on Saturday, November 5, 2016, in Indian Rocks Beach, FL.

If you’re interested in biking or running on the day of the event, you can form a team with your friends, family or colleagues as we collectively work to raise funds to find a cure. You may also choose to participate in biking or running endurance events.

Other ways to show your support include volunteering at the event or making a donation.

Your participation or donation helps advocate for families suffering from ALS. This event is also a fundraiser for The ALS Association Florida Chapter. Funds raised will be used to provide services for people living with ALS and their caregivers throughout Florida.

Incentives are available for the various levels of fundraising and include T-shirts, jerseys and a hotel stay.
