How to Keep Your Electric Bike in Great Condition
February 22, 2022 10:14 pm Leave your thoughtsAs the owner of an electric bike, you’re probably always on the lookout for good information about e-bike maintenance and care. After all, it only makes sense to want to protect your investment so you can enjoy it for years to come!
With this in mind, here are six tips on how to maintain your e-bike to keep it operating smoothly and safely.
Keep it clean
We know that many of you really enjoy working on your e-bikes, but be careful about getting grease and grime out of the different components. For example, excess dirt and grime can get stuck in the brake pads. Removing it is a bit of a pain, but it’s well worth the effort to keep your brakes functioning properly. Also, keeping dirt and grime off the tires means that you will get a longer life out of them.
Keep it lubricated
The chain on your e-bike is constantly under stress and tension when in use, particularly on a pedal-assist bike where the motor works harder. As a result, it’s important to keep it properly lubricated. But don’t forget the other moving components of your bike, including the front and rear derailleurs, the pedal bearings, the pedals themselves and the bottom bracket.
Inspect frequently
You should perform regular visual inspections of your e-bike to ensure everything is working properly and nothing is in need of immediate repair or replacement. This includes checking the chain for breaks, cracks and scratches; the brakes for correct pad placement and any leaks in the lines; the shifting system for bent or broken derailleurs and worn parts; tire wear patterns to indicate alignment issues, etc.
Keep it tuned up
Most e-bikes don’t need a lot of maintenance, but they do require regular tune-ups (especially if they are not equipped with internally geared hubs). Tuning up your e-bike means checking the battery, controller, motor and all cables for damage and ensuring that everything is properly connected. You should also check the tire pressure, brakes and suspension to ensure they are working at their best.
Keep it clean
Even if you are meticulous about keeping your e-bike clean, you should still wash it after every ride to keep it looking nice and to prolong its life. As a bonus, it’s easier to perform all sorts of e-bike maintenance if your bike is clean!
Keep it charged
Maintaining your e-bike battery is essential if you want to get the most life out of it. You may have a battery indicator on your electric bike battery, so you should know when it’s running low and needs to be charged. Also, any time you take your e-bike out of storage, make sure the battery is fully charged before riding it!
