How To Choose the Best Fenders for Your Bicycle

Finding the right fender for your bicycle is easy to do, no matter if you ride in rainy weather or wintery weather. Even if you never plan on riding your bike in inclement weather, water often remains on the road or trail even after the rain has passed. This means that you can still face issues. Fenders are great investments because they save your bottom from getting soaked. They also protect your bike from grime and grit.

Choosing the Right Bicycle Fender

Here is your very own guide to bicycle fenders. This should help you choose the one that is right for your bike.

Types of Fender Attachments

Bolt-On

If you have a bike with enough clearance, a seat stay bridge, or a drilled fork crown, this will probably be your most durable option because it is secure and clean looking.

Quick Release

If your bike doesn’t have any bosses or clearance where you can install fenders, there are still options for you to choose from. Many brands offer strap-on fenders that feature Velcro straps or clips to easily attach to your seat post, seat stays, seat tube, or fork.

Saddle Mounted

Out of all, the saddle mounted is the most minimalist style. This features a basic rear mudguard that easily fits right under your saddle between the rails. It helps to keep your backside protected from the worst. They are simple to install and remove.

Zip Tie

Another minimalist design is the zip tie. It is easy to install and is popular on mountain bikes. They are fairly universal in design and will fit most mountain bikes. They vary in style and compatibility will depend on your frame, especially if you own a full-suspension bike.

How To Choose the Right Size

Since there are so many variations in frame design and sizing available, you should know that fenders are not one-size-fits-all. You will need to make sure that you measure your bike and choose a set that will work for your bike. There are several things to consider when you fit your bike for a fender including tire radius, tire width, and frame clearance.

Tire Radius

You should check the side of the tires using either 650b or 700c to denote the tire radius size. Mountain bikes use 26 inches, 27.5, or 29 inches for the tire radius sizes.

Tire Width

You can check your tire width, which is printed on the side of your tire, and select the fenders that are at least 8mm wider than the tire.

Frame Clearance

Finally, you should make sure you have enough space to fit a fender between the frame and tires. You will need at least 20 to 30 millimeters of space between each. You also need to ensure that the front fender is narrow enough to fit between your fork and/or brake caliper and that your rear fender can fit between the seat stay and/or the caliper.
