There’s nothing quite like the thrill of gliding down a hill on your favorite bike path, the wind in your hair and your eyes on the many interesting sites around you, whether it’s a beautiful bird or the activity of a busy city. But on top of being fun, riding a bike has been linked to a variety of different health benefits.

You might have already decided to look into bike rentals in Boca Raton, FL because riding a bike is simply good fun, but read on to see how this enjoyable activity will also contribute to keeping you healthier!

Longer Lifespans

According to a study from the University of Glasgow, biking recreationally is linked with a longer lifespan as well as a lower risk of serious diseases. The study followed a large number of commuters—more than 263,450—in the United Kingdom for five years on average. The commuters were between 40 and 69 years of age; 48 percent were men and 52 percent were women.

To conduct the study, the researchers split participants based on their type of commute, whether that was driving a car, taking public transportation, walking, bicycling, using a mix of walking and riding or using a mix of cycling and riding. By splitting the participants this way, researchers were able to look at the correlation between commute type and longevity.

They found that biking was linked to a smaller risk of cardiovascular disease or cancer. They also discovered that biking was associated with a lower risk of dying of any cause within the five years they conducted the study.

Benefits vs. Risks

Some critics have pointed out that riding a bike does come with some inherent risks. Of course, people on bikes are exposed to certain dangers. They can crash their bike if they lose control, and those who bike in traffic are at a higher risk of being involved in accidents with vehicles or even other bikers.

Still, the study from the University of Glasgow confirmed that the benefits of riding a bike definitely outweighed any of these risks, and the risks themselves can be mitigated with a few key practices. For example, you should always make sure that you are protected with proper clothing and a well-fitting helmet. Also, bikes that are well-maintained are safer to ride.
